The Journey

Our History

Northern Light Microscopy is a spin our from the University of Strathclyde founded by Drs. Peter W. Tinning & Ralf Bauer, with the mission of removing the prohibitive barriers currently facing bioscience labs looking to leverage next generation microscopy methods and instrumentation to make the bioscience discoveries of tomorrow.

Dr. Ralf Bauer & Peter Tinning began working with each other in Jan. 2020 with the aim of developing a low-cost versatile super-resolution system that could be easily set up in life science labs. This research generated significant interest from local collaborators and spurred them to explore commercialization options.

With the support of Innovate UK, Pioneer Group and the University of Strathclyde commercialization programmes, significant customer discovery and market exploration was carried out demonstrating a global interested customer base and a significant market gap that their technology could fill.

Prior to spinning out the core technology was filed for formal protection via a PCT, and the founding team went on to secure over £175,000 in non-dilutive funding to de-risk the technology development and commercial traction.

With the addition of Colin Roberts bringing his valuable track record in venture backed commercialisation within life science markets and applications, Northern Light Microscopy were ready to make a real impact and with their technology, bring to market a range of accessible advanced microscopy systems that empower life science labs to make the society changing bioscience discoveries of tomorrow.
